Archaeologists searching for King Arthur's round table have found a "circular feature" beneath the historic King's Knot in Stirling. The King's Knot, a geometrical earthwork in the former royal gardens below Stirling Castle, has been shrouded in mystery for hundreds of years. Though the Knot as it appears today dates from the 1620s, its flat-topped central mound is thought to be much older. Writers going back more than six centuries have linked the landmark to the legend of King Arthur. Archaeologists from Glasgow University, working with the Stirling Local History Society and Stirling Field and Archaeological Society, conducted the first...

| I found some interesting facts about Chester Alan Arthur, who served as President in 1881-85, succeeding to the office after the assassination of James Garfield. Arthur's father was an Irishman who moved to Canada. There, he eloped with an American woman from Vermont. Canada and Ireland were, at the time, under the government of the United Kingdom. The couple had several children, including Chester. The father did not become a naturalized American citizen until long after Chester's birth. During the 1880 presidential campaign, Democrats hired Wall Street lawyer Arthur P. Hinman to investigate Arthur's background. Hinman released his findings to... |

| POTUS Usurper Chester Arthur Forced Military To Salute British Flag Back in December, this blog broke the story that former US President Chester Arthur lied in newspaper interviews with the Brooklyn Eagle about his parental heritage. These lies covered up the fact that Chester Arthur, at the time of his birth, was a British Subject due to the fact that his father, William Arthur, was not a US citizen at the time Chester was born. This fact, had it been discovered back when Chester Arthur was running for Vice President, would have been an impediment to his nomination.... |

| "God will get you for that, Walter." Nobody could do more with these words than Beatrice Arthur as Maude Findlay on the marital warpath. She could slingshot them in fury or release them in a chilling deadpan, but however she delivered them you could be sure they'd hit their mark with a prizefighter's pop. All the tributes that will be lavished on Arthur, who died Saturday at 86, will extol her impeccable comic timing. Her ability to detonate a joke, to momentarily harness a punch line before releasing at full force, brought her Emmy-winning success in two groundbreaking sitcoms --... |

| BBC Audio: Dyson and Clarke Will life spread out from Earth to flourish in the cosmos? Freeman Dyson has always supported the idea, and with great persuasiveness. BBC Four has created an archive of interviews on its Web site, among which is a clip of Dyson discussing lifeâs variety and the imperative of broadening its range. The theoretical physicist, who played an important role in the development of the âatomic spaceshipâ concept called Project Orion, doesnât believe manâs role is simply to send the occasional astronaut out in what he calls âa metal canâ to look out a window.... |

| King Arthur is propaganda, say French By Peter Allen in Paris Last Updated: 10:56PM BST 29/06/2008 French historians have accused the English of propagating the legend of King Arthur for "political reasons". King Arthur: 'a mythical character who was invented at a certain point in history for essentially political reasons'Even if a character who vaguely resembled the fabled leader did exist, he would probably have been a Welshman with strong connections to Brittany and whose sworn enemies were the Anglo-Saxons, they said. The organisers of a conference and exhibition to be held at Rennes university in northern France next month... |

| A few months ago, my wife and I had the pleasure of meeting some new neighbors for the first time. Young parents in the orthodox Jewish community, they were intrigued to discover these Gentiles -- one South African, the other Czech -- who had chosen to make Jerusalem their home, marrying in Israel's ancient capital, and bringing five children into the world in the heart of this global hot spot. While the two mothers paired off and visited in Hebrew, I spoke with the young man who probed me for answers, keen to understand our reasons for being here. I... |

| STARING into the terrifying thunderous tumult of the Corryvreckan whirlpool, it's easy to see why its sheer primal energy has fascinated people for centuries. Now Edinburgh folklorist Stuart McHardy has suggested a startling new theory - that the awe-inspiring natural vortex between the islands of Scarba and Jura in Argyll and Bute was the true origin of the Holy Grail. At its wildest, some say the whirlpool forms a spectacular swirling cauldron 300 feet wide and 100 feet deep. The cause is hidden beneath the waves a giant rock pinnacle rising from the depths to within 95 feet of... |
Evidence found of ancient tribute to King Arthur's Round Table

It is a legendary artefact of British history - albeit one for which there is no evidence. In 1344, King Edward III supposedly built a huge round hall to house a table for his 300 knights. His aim was to recreate the Arthurian legend of the Knights of the Round Table. The only problem was that - much like King Arthur's original Table at Camelot - many historians doubted whether it actually existed. Until now that is. For archaeologists digging up the Queen's front lawn at Windsor Castle yesterday unearthed a spectacular find. Below the turf of one of the...

Crops failed, and there was famine, Dr Mike Baillie of Queen's University, Belfast, told the British Association for the Advancement... |

The tax burden in Virginia increased by 55 percent in that period, with a per capita amount of $1,903 in 2004. In Maryland, the tax burden increased by 46 percent, with an individual tax burden of $2,214 in 2004. A practitioner of black arts, a demon, ogreish, and a seditionist are a few of the descriptions of him handed down to us from his first major biographer. The passage of time hasnt tempered these hysterical reactions. The late senator, the story goes, created a climate of fear in the early 1950s by conducting a witchhunt that called liberals Communists and Communists spies. We now know better. The witches were real. Today,... |

| On Wednesday, the Supreme Court tossed the conviction of the Arthur Andersen accounting firm, saying that the judges instructions to the jury were not defined well enough. Unfortunately, there isn't anyone at Arthur Andersen to celebrate the victory. Almost all of the accounting firms employees lost their jobs following Andersen's demise over the shredfest at Enron. Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist wrote "The jury instructions at issue simply failed to convey the requisite consciousness of wrongdoing, It is striking how little culpability the instructions required." |

Indeed, within hours of Miller's passing February 10, the famed playwright was receiving rousing reviews for his prodigious literary output that won him a Pulitzer, four Tony awards and a flock of other honors. The man who had once married Marilyn Monroe was lavishly celebrated for several important dramas, including All My Sons (1947), Death of A Salesman (1949), The Crucible (1953) and A View From the Bridge (1955). | The new information places the construction of the dyke within the shadowy period that began with the formal withdrawal of the Roman administration (AD 410) and ended with the absorption of the area into Mercia. The report concludes: 'The dyke should therefore be regarded as being contemporary with that other great fifth-century linear earthwork, the Wiltshire Wansdyke, rather than Offa's Dyke, and should be considered as an achievement of the post-Roman kingdom of the northern Cornovii, rather than the work of seventh- or eighth-century Mercia.' |
